Disability studies class presentations on "A Stroke Of Endurance" and more

On March 27 2023 I met with another class of psychology students to answer a multitude of questions about “A Stroke Of Endurance”. I explained that Ava’s fears that she may have caused the professor’s stroke and how ableism directed at Ava factored into Ava’s reactions. One student was surprised the Professor Ben character was allowed to return to work so quickly which led to a discussion about dignity of risk. One student asked if “A Stroke Of Endurance” was my first film. One person in the audience disclosed her CP and described her type of CP as an “invisible disability” and that she had epilepsy. We discussed how Cerebral Palsy effects eye movement and reflexes. One person asked about relaxation techniques for CP. One person asked about medication and CP which led into a discussion of medication being life giving. On March 28th Dylan Rothbein who audio edited and audio described for all 4 currently released Crip Video Productions films in 2016, and I spoke about Crip Video Productions and Dylan’s films and music to a disability studies class. I have permission from these classes to write this post! Dylan Roth Liberty Coalition released videos featuring me Margot Cole talking about Cerebral Palsy and Crip Video Productions film “Drama Sighted” https://youtu.be/DPivocd0vj8 and doing a tribute to the late great disability rights activist Judy Heumann. https://youtu.be/QnFF-nfJjqI I was also quoted by CUNY in an article about Judy Heumann. 2 Talks on education

On September 28 2022, I spoke to a group of students who are becoming special education teachers about Cerebral Palsy, media representation of disability, and education for disabled students. We discussed some movies the students had already watched for the class and the meaning behind “Crip” in Crip Video Productions. We discussed “Drama Sighted” and “A Stroke Of Endurance”. The students told me what resonated with them in what they had watched. Some students shared how they had seen disabled people get underestimated by doctors and the larger society. Some didn’t know people with invisible disabilities could use the ADA. On October 6th 2022 I spoke to another group of students learning to be teachers for very young children. The discussion was about Crip Video Productions, Cerebral Palsy, and individualizing education accommodations and building accessibility into a course as a course is being designed from the beginning. We talked about disability representation in books and the fact that students will have disabled parents that the teacher will also have to accommodate.

Education talk and kids performance

On April 12 2022 I(Margot) spoke to a group of young college students about disability and the public education system. We discussed Individual Education Plans(IEPs) proper accommodations, ableism and Cerebral Palsy. I spoke about how Cerebral Palsy was actually classified as a developmental disability but Cerebral Palsy is an injury like a stroke, rather than genetic as many other developmental disabilities are. Of course Crip Video Productions was mentioned as the talk went into disability representation and movies. In other news Umbrella Children's Theater where I'm(Margot) vice president is having it's Spring performance this weekend! This performance includes actors with disabilities! A Musical Pinata for Christmas 9 on Xerb

The NY primos in “Marimorena, Biscochitos, and the Fear of Missing Out” are played by New York City-based Crip Video Productions https://cripvideoproductions.com company members Margot Cole, and Izabela Ginda from "A Stroke Of Endurance", as part of A Musical Pinata for Christmas 9, which is being streamed from today until June 3 2022. The performance features a mix of disabled and non disabled performers. Click here https://xerb.tv/channel/teatro-paraguas/virtual-events/2838 to view the performance for free.  To make a Xerb account click the yellow sign up button, make a username and password, then click on "A Musical Pinata for Christmas IX" and click "watch" and "I agree to let Teatro Paraguas see my email" to view.  An annual community celebration for the holidays featuring a short play written by Alix Hudson and Paola Vengoechea Martini, and directed by JoJo Sena de Tarnoff entitled "Marimorena, Biscochitos, and the Fear of Missing Out." The play continues the storyline from last year’s featured play, "Home for the Holidays: Con Amor y Gozo," which was performed solely on Zoom. This year’s production is a hybrid offering, with a number of actors participating from New York via Zoom. In this Spanglish romp, 30 actors of all ages from our Paraguas family are also a literal family -- desperately trying to cobble together a "normal" Christmas for the family matriarch, Mama JoJo (JoJo Sena de Tarnoff). But with the chaos of the kids making biscochitos, the teens creating tree ornaments, the adults fussing over whether to present the Misa del Gallo on Zoom, and Padre and others hitting the Communion wine, chaos and hilarity shine as bright as the Christmas star. The Teatro Paraguas Orchestra, with 10 musicians led by Jeff Tarnoff, plays traditional and contemporary carols, including a few with dance routines choreographed by Xochitl Ehrl. A number of other short plays are presented, including "Oh, Tannenbaum," by Mark Harvey Levine. And Santa Clos shows up at the last minute to help bring down the piƱata for all the kids in the audience.
